High Peak Trail (2)
Just south of Parsley Hay the railway passed through Newhaven Tunnel, below what is now the A515 road
from Buxton to Ashbourne. This stone forms part of the south-eastern portal.
A picture of a wagon carrying stone is surrounded by the words "Cromford & High Peak Railway"
with the year 1825 below: this was when an Act of Parliament was passed authorising the building of the line, and
the railway company was incorporated. In the four corners can be seen "P H & Co"
- suggestions as to what this stands for would be welcome.
For a stone on the north-western portal, see the next picture.
